United Campus Ministry - Kalamazoo
United Campus Ministry is a non-traditional campus ministry serving higher education campuses in Kalamazoo. Reaching students through service learning, UCM sponsors Habitat for Humanity, Volunteering with Kids, Urban Plunge Weekends, Alternative Spring Breaks, Inter-Action, and Uncommon Bible Study. UCM’s mission is “to infuse the task of education with a vision of the world made whole.” Campus ministers are the Rev. Coleen Smith Slosberg, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. UCM/Kalamazoo is expanding its service/learning ministry. During 2009-2010, 300 students did 5000 hours of service work worth about $75,000. Maggie Hiatt joined Kathleen King and me at UCM in January and led her first Chicago urban plunge trip in March. She brought to the trip new ideas about service and education. She added 7 more students to the 28 we usually take and had them work with a new (to us) agency where the students did painting and minor repairs for elderly persons in the city of Chicago. Our students work each Saturday providing activities and lunch at the Boys and Girls Club. And the Habitat for Humanity chapter builds each Saturday in Kalamazoo and learns about housing issues. As Kathleen says, “We’re UCM. Reflection is what we do.” And we are always asking the questions: Why are things the way they are? How do we help?, and How can I use my education to serve the world?
