Ministry Areas
- The Encouragement Project
The Encouragement Project of the Shepherding Ministry Team has received
a one year grant from the Synod of the Covenant. Seven retired pastors
and their spouses have been selected to serve as encouragers to pastors
and their spouses who have relatively new calls in the presbytery.
Encouragers will serve as trusted colleagues, sharing joys and concerns
in a confidential relationship over meals and other means of contact.
Unrelated to Committee on Ministry or other official presbytery
relations, this project is based on doing random acts of kindness,
inspired by the words of Paul in I Thess. 2:12b: "...encouraging,
comforting, and urging you to live lives worthy of God who calls you
into his kingdom and glory." Contact Kurt Freund,

- Older Adult Ministries For two years the Shepherding Ministry Team
has sponsored persons to attend the Presbyterian Older Adult Ministry Network
(and Health Ministries) Conference. Older adults make up a good percentage of
our church membership, and the team is looking for ways to assist
congregations in ministry to this part of our population. Books on parish
nursing and older adult ministry have been purchased for the Presbytery
Resource Center. We will be providing leadership training on “compassionate
listening”. As our work progresses, we hope to make concrete suggestions to
congregations on ways to support older adults and their special needs and ways
for older adults to use their gifts in ministry to all generations. Contact

Support Groups-Shepherding is the location for the
development of support groups for persons with similar interests in the
presbytery. Ongoing groups in existence at this time are:
- Spousters - This is a word coined to give a name to spouses
of pastors – both male and female --who often get together at Saturday
presbytery meetings. They also plan retreats for pastors’ families.

- Educator Fellowship. This group meets four times a year and offers
support and sharing of resources to professional and volunteer educators in
congregations. Contact: Karen Nottelmann,
knottelmann@aol.com 616-455-4675
- PALMS. The Presbyterian Association of Lake Michigan Secretaries
(PALMS) gathers to provide support through prayer, education and resources as
we develop and use our gifts to the glory of God in ministry to the church,
congregations, and communities within the Presbytery of Lake Michigan.
